For a large family, the journey is decided
not by travel time but by the number of seats.
On a map, flying into Fukuoka looks convenient. But the direct bus runs twice a day with assigned seats (from Fukuoka Airport's international terminal, about 125 minutes), and six seats have to remain on the same departure. The local bus from Nagasaki Airport needs no reservation and costs 7,500 yen for six.

The main pointIt is Fukuoka that runs short of departures
Here is the conclusion. On a map, flying into Fukuoka looks more convenient. But add the condition "six seats on the same departure" and the answer flips to Nagasaki.
Four adults and two elementary-school children, six in all. Or seven with grandparents. On the day you land from abroad, it means nothing unless you can all board the same bus. A seat that is free for two is not free for six.
Fukuoka (Tenjin) to Huis Ten Bosch Officially confirmed
Two departures a day each way, and the official pages state that it is "assigned seating (reservation required)" (jointly operated by Nishitetsu and Saihi Bus). The stop is Fukuoka Airport's international terminal, and the official notice asks passengers to "buy your ticket at the counter or a machine at least 10 minutes before departure".
Nagasaki Airport to Huis Ten Bosch Officially confirmed
The Saihi bus needs no reservation and is timed to flight arrivals. That said, the official page also states that "you may not be able to board if the bus is full".
The fast ferry (Nagasaki Airport to Huis Ten Bosch)
⚠ It runs on weekends and public holidays only; on weekdays every sailing is cancelled. Two sailings a day (Nagasaki Airport 10:30 arriving 11:20, and 15:20 arriving 16:10). Families landing on a weekday should rule this one out from the start.
What the official pages publish for that line are figures by section — "15 services between Sasebo Station and Nagasaki Airport, 9 between Sasa Bus Centre and Nagasaki Airport" — and this article could not confirm how many run to and from Huis Ten Bosch itself.
Departures each way on the same operators' "Sasebo-go" service to Sasebo.
The direct service to Huis Ten Bosch runs twice a day.
Two departures a day with assigned seating means, for a family of six, "choose a day on which six seats remain on the same departure". Nor can you be switched to another service if your flight is late. There is, however, one more overland option from Fukuoka. On the same Nishitetsu and Saihi network, the "Sasebo-go" service to Sasebo runs 22 times a day each way (assigned seating, reservation required; you can board at Fukuoka Airport international too; Fukuoka Tenjin to Sasebo Bus Centre is 2,600 yen for an adult, 1 hour 50 minutes; children are half the adult fare rounded up). From Sasebo Bus Centre you change to a Saihi local bus for Huis Ten Bosch.
- The question of whether six seats remain on one departure eases considerably on the service that runs 22 times
- In exchange, you add one change with luggage for six. ⚠ This article could not confirm the fare or journey time of the local bus between Sasebo and Huis Ten Bosch
- So the real choice when flying into Fukuoka is between "betting six seats on two daily departures" and "adding one change to gain 22 departures"
On arrival day a family of six takes time at immigration and at baggage reclaim. With only two direct departures a day, the service will not absorb that delay. This article could not confirm the departure times, so look up the actual services on a booking site and work out for yourself how much slack you have against your scheduled arrival.
If you would rather not gamble on seats, book the round trip as one product
This is a return bus from Hakata bundled with a park passport. You no longer have to secure six outbound seats separately.
The product page states that the return leg can be arranged for a later day, so it also works for families who are staying overnight.
This is a shared group tour with other passengers, not a private charter. It takes 9 to 12 hours. Check departure times, operating days and prices on the Klook product page.
Five routes compared, one way for six
In short: for the same trip from the airport to Huis Ten Bosch, one way for six ranges from 0 to 23,740 yen.
Here is the quick version first. Your arrival airport and the day of the week very nearly decide the route.
- Nagasaki Airport, arriving on a weekend or holiday — the fast ferry (about 50 minutes, booking required) or the Saihi bus. Take the ferry if you are in a hurry
- Nagasaki Airport, arriving on a weekday — the ferry does not run. The Saihi bus is the only option, and needing no reservation makes it the easiest
- Fukuoka Airport, any day — the direct bus runs twice a day. Check whether six seats remain on the same departure before you book a hotel
- Fukuoka Airport, no direct bus available — the JR limited express from Hakata (about 23,740 yen for six) or the Sasebo-go to Sasebo and a change
The six people in this article are four adults and two elementary-school children. We have applied the half fare only where the operator states in writing that children pay "half the adult fare, rounded up". ⚠ The treatment of preschool children and junior-high students could not be confirmed except on the ferry (only the ferry states that "one infant per adult travels free; from the second, the child fare applies").
| Route | One way for six | Per person | Time | Booking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Nagasaki Airport, free airport bus for official-hotel guests | 0 yen | 0 yen | about 60 min | Online, until 17:00 three days ahead |
| 2. Nagasaki Airport, Saihi bus | 7,500 yen | 1,250 yen | 59 min (official) | None needed |
| 3. Nagasaki Airport, fast ferry | 12,500 yen | about 2,080 yen | about 50 min | Advance booking; weekends and holidays only, 2 a day |
| 4. Fukuoka (Tenjin), highway bus | 13,000 yen | about 2,170 yen | 2 hr 3 min | Assigned seating, 2 a day each way |
| 5. Fukuoka (Hakata Station), JR limited express Huis Ten Bosch, reserved | 23,740 yen (guide) | about 3,960 yen | 1 hr 43 min at best | Reserved seats mean one per person |
- 1 is limited to certain hotels and room types, so it is "0 yen only for families who got one of them" (see below)
- 2 is 1,500 yen for an adult and 750 for a child (Saihi Bus official)
- 3 is 2,500 yen for an adult and 1,250 for a child. You can also board on the day from Nagasaki Airport, but it is "first come, first served", so there is no guarantee that six seats are free. There is a return discount (2,000 yen for adults, 1,000 for children), but the group discount starts at ten people, so a family of six does not qualify
- 4 is the only route you can board straight from the arrivals hall, because the stop is at the international terminal. Saihi Bus's official fare table gives 2,600 yen for an adult from Fukuoka Airport to Huis Ten Bosch, the same as from Tenjin or Hakata Bus Terminal (as of September 2026). It states in writing that children pay half the adult fare, rounded up
- 5 is 4,750 yen for an adult and 2,370 for a child. ⚠ These are the figures JR Kyushu publishes as the "regular price (about 4,750 yen)" with children at "about half the adult fare" (the breakdown into base fare plus reserved limited-express ticket is not published, so treat it as a guide; a transfer search showed 4,220 yen for an adult in a non-reserved seat). Route 5 also needs the subway fare from Fukuoka Airport to Hakata Station, which we could not confirm
And route 5 has room for a discount. JR Kyushu states that its online-only "Kyushu Net Ticket" is 2,050 yen cheaper than the regular price (about 2,700 yen for an adult). Over six people that is a difference of more than 10,000 yen. ⚠ We did not confirm whether it applies to children, or whether six seats can be secured on the same train.
Journey times vary by source. For the bus from Nagasaki Airport to Huis Ten Bosch, Saihi Bus says 59 minutes and Huis Ten Bosch says about 70. "About an hour" is the safe assumption.
Transport cost is not the whole pictureFlying into Fukuoka comes with ticket-inclusive passes
In short: routes 1 to 5 above compare transport alone, but if you come from Fukuoka there are two passes that include park admission. Both are official products.
Huis Ten Bosch Ticket (Nishitetsu) Officially confirmed
Also on sale at the Fukuoka Airport bus terminal (international)
- A return highway-bus ticket between Fukuoka or Fukuoka Airport and Huis Ten Bosch or Sasebo, a one-way local bus ticket between Sasebo and Huis Ten Bosch, and a Huis Ten Bosch 1-Day Passport.
- ⚠ The official page says nothing about a child fare.
- ⚠ It also notes that "an additional charge applies on the special dates set by Huis Ten Bosch".
Huis Ten Bosch Ticket (JR Kyushu)
From within Fukuoka city / valid four days
- A return JR ticket to Huis Ten Bosch Station plus a voucher for a 1-Day Passport.
- On sale through JR Kyushu's online reservation or a reserved-seat machine at the departure station, from 05:30 one month ahead until 23:00 on the day.
- Four adults and two elementary-school children come to 66,840 yen for six (12,900 × 4 plus 7,620 × 2) — the return train fare and one day's admission in a single ticket
Ticket types and prices for admission itself are covered in the one-day itinerary article, so decide whether a pass is worth it by comparing against the real figures there. They are in A one-day Huis Ten Bosch plan for a large family.
The point that matters for a large familyThe Nagasaki Airport bus needs no reservation
In short: not having to secure six seats in advance is the single biggest thing for a large family.
- No reservation means you can wait for the next bus if your flight is late (on an assigned-seat highway bus you would be negotiating six transfers after you land)
- That said, the official page also states that "you may not be able to board if the bus is full", so it is not a guarantee that six of you will get on. In busy periods, aim for one service earlier
- Frequencies are timed to flight arrivals, so you can plan on a service existing that matches your landing time
- The price difference is 5,500 yen one way for six, 11,000 yen return, but that is not the point of this section. The point is that you do not have to lock in six seats in advance
- ⚠ Still, which airport you can fly into comes first. If it means a domestic connection, add that fare and the connection time before comparing
We have written a similar cost comparison for families flying into Kyushu via Fukuoka in the Beppu article. See Getting to Beppu from Fukuoka Airport: a large family's guide.
It collides with your choice of hotelThe free airport bus covers only two hotels
In short: the free airport bus from Nagasaki Airport is for guests of Hotel Europe and of three room types at Hotel Amsterdam, and no one else.
- The wording on the official Huis Ten Bosch benefits page is "guests staying at Hotel Europe or Hotel Amsterdam (Deluxe Designer Room, Miffy Room, Chocolate Room)"
- It is not "free if you stay at the Amsterdam". It is limited to three room types
- Booking is online only, until 17:00 three days before use. You cannot sign up after you arrive. It takes about 60 minutes
- Forest Villa and Hotel Rotterdam are not named on the official benefits page (strictly speaking, not being listed is not the same as being excluded, so check with the property directly before booking)
Capacities and real prices by property are compared here. See One room for five at the Huis Ten Bosch hotels.
Designing your arrival timeArriving by 15:00 is enough
In short: if you are staying at an official hotel, reaching Huis Ten Bosch by 15:00 on day one is enough.
- The official FAQ says guests of the official hotels need only buy a "1-Day Passport" or an "After 3 Passport" for their check-in day (from the next day, reception hands you the "next-day 1-Day Passport")
- The After 3 starts at 15:00. So if you can design day one as an evening start, there is little point forcing an early flight
- Forest Villa, Hotel Europe and Hotel Den Haag are in the Harbour Zone, which is free to enter, so you can check in and drop your bags before buying a passport. Arrive in the morning and you can still rest without a ticket
- ⚠ But on all-areas-paid days such as the fireworks festival or the New Year countdown, a passport is required even for guests who are only staying
- ⚠ Hotel Amsterdam alone stands inside the paid zone, and the official FAQ says "even guests must purchase a passport for their check-in day"
Four things to check before you book
These are the parts you cannot fix afterwards if you do not check them first, and the parts we could not confirm.
Landing on a weekday? Rule out the ferry from the start
Every weekday sailing is cancelled. Even on operating days there are only two a day (Nagasaki Airport 10:30 and 15:20).
"No reservation needed" does not mean "you will get a seat"
Saihi Bus's own page says you may be unable to board when the bus is full. Travelling as six, aim for one service earlier in busy periods.
We have the fare from Fukuoka Airport, but not the times
Saihi Bus's official fare table confirms 2,600 yen for an adult from Fukuoka Airport as well as from Tenjin. What we do not have are the departure times of the two daily services. Work out the slack against your scheduled arrival by looking up the actual services on a booking site.
What we left without a figure
The fare and journey time of the local bus between Sasebo and Huis Ten Bosch; the subway fare from Fukuoka Airport to Hakata Station (the official fare search would not open; we tried twice); getting from Fukuoka Airport's international terminal to the domestic terminal and the subway station; whether children qualify for the highway bus's online multi-ticket (8,400 yen for a set, 2,100 each) and return pair ticket (5,000 yen, 2,500 each); how children are treated on the bus pass; motorway tolls and six-seater car models for a rental car. All we could confirm is that the nearest interchange is Sasebo Daito IC on the Nishi-Kyushu Expressway, about 10 minutes from the car park.
Fukuoka and Nagasaki to Huis Ten Bosch: FAQ
Should we go from Fukuoka Airport or Nagasaki Airport?
Nagasaki Airport suits a family of six better. The Saihi bus needs no reservation, is timed to flight arrivals, and costs 7,500 yen one way for six. The direct bus from Fukuoka (Tenjin) runs twice a day with assigned seats, so six seats have to remain on the same departure. Even flying into Fukuoka, you can take the "Sasebo-go" to Sasebo (22 departures a day each way) and change to a local bus — the worry about frequency disappears, but you add one change with luggage for six. Still, which airport you can reach from where you start comes first.
Should we book six seats in advance?
Book the highway bus and the JR limited express from Fukuoka. The bus has assigned seating, and reserved seats on the train mean one per person. The fast ferry also takes advance bookings (same-day boarding is first come, first served). Only the Saihi bus from Nagasaki Airport needs no reservation, but since the official page says you may not be able to board when it is full, aiming for one service earlier is safer in busy periods. On booking culture in Japan, see Popular restaurants and experiences in Japan need booking well ahead.
Can we use the fast ferry?
Only families arriving on a weekend or public holiday. Every weekday sailing is cancelled, and even on operating days there are two a day (Nagasaki Airport 10:30 and 15:20). At 12,500 yen for six it is 5,000 yen more than the Saihi bus, but at about 50 minutes it is a little quicker.
We have six large suitcases. Will they fit on the bus?
This article could not confirm each operator's luggage rules. But what a family of six needs to check is fixed: how many pieces per person and the maximum size; whether luggage for six fits on the same assigned-seat highway bus; and whether a pushchair can go on unfolded. In practice, sending the bags ahead to your accommodation from the airport or station is often more workable than carrying six people's luggage through changes. See Sending luggage ahead in Japan: the hands-free courier guide.
